We learned words from wildflowers declining in the field, anemones and buttercups, asters, campanulas, goldenrods, pussytoes and thistles, bedstraws and bluets, bladderworts, dogwoods, lilies, louseworts and Indian paintbrushes, mints, orchids, primroses, roses, saxifrages, Indian pipes, St. John’s worts, and violets. We read flowering times from a countryside map sown by hand. The then and now the never to come will have been flowering in the species slipped from the sun. The fax was broken, the internet too abstract. We sent messages by radio, telegraph, pigeon, balloon. The flowers stop the flowers stop the advancing march of spring flowering stop We couldn’t forget the careful catalogues from the 1850s or the disappearance of several fields of sight.
